Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Elephant Corridor Ecology

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, covering over 344 square kilometres, forms part of the largest contiguous forest block in South Asia along with Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. This Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve corridor supports one of India's highest elephant population densities — over 1,200 individuals use Wayanad seasonally. The corridor's integrity depends on maintaining forest cover between the sanctuary and surrounding coffee and pepper plantations. Indigenous communities have traditional knowledge of elephant movement patterns and traditional methods of non-violent coexistence, including using smoke fires and noise to guide herds away from crops. Human-wildlife conflict remains a critical challenge, with compensation schemes administered through the Kerala Forest Department.
