Pochampally Ikat Silk Weaving Heritage of Warangal Region

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Pochampally village in the Warangal-Nalgonda border area is the epicentre of the Pochampally Ikat tradition — one of India's most technically complex handloom textiles and a UNESCO-recognised craft. The Ikat technique involves resist-dyeing the yarn bundles before weaving, so that the dye pattern forms a blurry, feathered design when the yarn is woven. Pochampally weavers create double-Ikat designs where both warp and weft yarns are resist-dyed and aligned precisely during weaving — one of only three double-Ikat traditions in the world. The geometric diamond and chevron patterns in vibrant colours on silk or cotton have a GI tag and are sold through cooperative outlets and premium textile retailers globally.
