Uttarayani Fair Bageshwar: Kumaon's Largest Traditional Festival

The Uttarayani fair at Bageshwar held during Makar Sankranti in January is the largest traditional fair in Kumaon attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and traders over several days. The fair combines sacred bathing at the Saryu-Gomti confluence with trade in traditional goods, livestock exchange, and cultural performances. Historically the fair was the major commercial event where hill farmers exchanged forest products for plains goods. Folk performances including Jhumeila and Chhapeli dance forms, mask dances representing local deities, and traditional wrestling continue as cultural highlights.
