Patiala Tamba-Kansa Brassware Copperware Craft
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Patiala's thathera community of brass and copper craftsmen produce traditional kitchenware including paraat kneading trays, degchi cooking pots, and lota water vessels by hammering sheet metal over wooden forms and burnishing the surface to a mirror finish. The tamba-kansa (copper-bronze) craft of nearby Jandiala Guru in Amritsar district shares similar techniques with Patiala's craftsmen and received UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition in 2014. Patiala's thatheras sell their wares at the weekly bazar and supply temples for prasad distribution vessels and religious shrines for ritual utensils.
