Patiala Gharana Classical Music Tradition

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

The Patiala Gharana is one of Hindustani classical music's most celebrated vocal lineages, founded in the late 19th century under the patronage of the Patiala royal court by the legendary vocalist Fateh Ali Khan. Known for its bold, powerful voice culture, use of fast taan passages, and rich ornament vocabulary including the characteristic gamak shake, the Patiala style produced masters like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. The gharana's tradition continues through disciples and music institutions in Patiala, and its recordings remain canonical in classical Khayal training.
