Pathankot Shivalik Forest Medicinal Herbs
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Pathankot's Shivalik forest range contains medicinal plant resources including Tinospora cordifolia (giloy), Azadirachta indica neem, Vitex negundo (nirgundi), and Phyllanthus niruri (bhumyamalaki) harvested by NTFP-dependent tribal and OBC communities who supply herb collectors and Ayurvedic companies in Amritsar and Delhi. Forest herb harvesters in Pathankot's Ranjit Sagar Dam area observe seasonal harvesting windows and avoid over-collection of root species, maintaining community-managed access rules for the Shivalik medicinal plant commons. Punjab Forest Department's Joint Forest Management committees in Pathankot formalise these traditional use rights and support sustainable harvesting protocols.
