Kalmegh Medicinal Herb Cultivation in Parbhani

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata, king of bitters) is a significant medicinal herb cultivated in Parbhani district for pharmaceutical industry demand. The plant is used in classical Ayurveda and folk medicine as a liver tonic, fever reducer, and immunomodulator. Its extremely bitter taste earned it the name 'maha tikta' (very bitter) in Sanskrit. Kalmegh cultivation in Parbhani's kharif season uses well-drained black soil with moderate rainfall. The whole plant is harvested 90-120 days after sowing, dried, and processed into powder or extract for herbal medicine manufacturers. Traditional healers in Parbhani district collect wild kalmegh from roadsides and waste land for local medicine preparation. Growing pharmaceutical demand for kalmegh as an ingredient in immune-support and liver health products has made cultivation economically attractive for Parbhani farmers seeking alternatives to cotton and soybean.
