Murshidabad Himsagar Langra Mango Malda Belt

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Murshidabad and adjacent Malda districts constitute West Bengal's principal mango belt, where Himsagar, Langra, Fazli, Gulabkhas, Lakshmanbhog, and Kohitur mango varieties are cultivated on an estimated 75,000 hectares of mango orchards that supply Kolkata's wholesale markets and premium mango exports to Europe and West Asia. Himsagar mango from Murshidabad-Malda has Geographical Indication status and is prized for its aromatic sweetness and zero fibre flesh — the benchmark premium Bengal mango that commands 5-10x the price of standard commercial varieties at specialist mango stalls in Kolkata's New Market. The mango orchard villages of Murshidabad along the Bhagirathi river have maintained grafted mango cultivar traditions for over 300 years, with some Langra variety trees documented as being over a century old in legacy orchards.
