Kota Doria Muslin Weave Rajasthan Cooperative

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kota Doria is an open-weave cotton-silk fabric produced in the Kaithun village cluster of the Kota district of Rajasthan, distinguished by its square check pattern formed by the alternation of cotton and silk yarn in both warp and weft. The fabric is uniquely light and transparent, used for summer sarees, dupattas, and scarves preferred for hot weather. Kota Doria received Geographical Indication status in 2005. Weavers from the Ansari Muslim community use traditional fly-shuttle pit looms with bamboo reeds to achieve the distinctive khat or square check pattern. The Rajasthan Cooperative Weaving Society and Kota Doria cooperative federations provide subsidised raw silk from Karnataka and cotton from Gujarat mills along with design workshops at Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation centres. Kota Doria sarees sell through government emporiums and craft fairs from Jaipur to Delhi and are exported to the Middle East. The weaving cluster is concentrated in Kaithun town and surrounding Hadoti region villages.
