Varkari Pilgrimage Route Through Kolhapur: Walking Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Varkari pilgrimage from Kolhapur to Pandharpur is one of Maharashtra's great walking traditions, covering over 250 km and drawing lakhs of devotees from the Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara regions. The dindi (pilgrimage group) tradition involves communities of 500-5,000 walking pilgrims led by palkhi (palanquins) carrying the paduka (footwear) of Varkari saints. The Kolhapur dindi is associated with the Sankapal and Ambabai temples, marching to the Pandharpur Vitthal temple for the Ashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi festivals. Walking the Pandharpur wari is considered equivalent to performing all religious rituals for the year. The pilgrimage route, maintained for 700 years, passes through dozens of villages where communities provide free food and water to pilgrims (the tradition of dharma-kshetra, sacred hospitality). The social dimension of the wari, bringing people of all castes together in devotional equality, exemplifies bhakti's equalising principle.
