Kathakali is the male classical dance-drama form of Kerala, one of the most visually spectacular performing arts in the world, in which a company of elaborately costumed and masked performers enact episodes from the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranas over entire nights in the open-air courtyards of temples and kalaris, using a complex gestural language (mudras) of 24 single-hand and 13 double-hand gestures that form a complete sign language for enacting Sanskrit and Malayalam poetry. The Kathakali costume involves up to six hours of preparation: the chutty (facial makeup built up from rice paste in multiple layers), the massive headgear (kireedam), the elaborate chest-plate, and the voluminous skirts that create the otherworldly appearance that defines the form's visual identity. Kathakali training is among the most demanding of any performing art tradition, beginning in childhood at Kerala Kalamandalam or private kalari academies, with intensive daily practice of eye exercises (netra vyayama) to achieve independent eye-movement control, facial muscle exercises for emotional expression (navarasas), and body flexibility training. The primary accompaniment instruments are chenda (cylindrical drum), maddalam (barrel drum), chengila (gong), and ilathalam (cymbals), with the singing done by two vocalist-musicians who narrate and interpret the text.
