Haripurdhar Alpine Pastures and Pastoral Heritage Sirmaur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Haripurdhar and the surrounding Churdhar range in Sirmaur district form high-altitude grazing grounds used by pastoral communities through summer. The highest peaks in Sirmaur rising above 3600 metres support alpine meadows accessible after snow clearance. Traditional transhumance routes are known intimately by herding families who have used them across generations. Wild medicinal plants including Kuth (Saussurea lappa), Bhojpatra (birch bark tree), and various alpine herbs are harvested from these high-altitude areas with traditional knowledge of sustainable collection and identification. The Churdhar wildlife sanctuary protects this alpine ecosystem. Community governance of grazing rights through traditional institutions prevents overgrazing while ensuring equitable access to seasonal pastures.
