Haridwar as Ayurvedic Medicine Hub: Patanjali and Tradition

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Haridwar has served as one of India's important Ayurvedic medicine centres for centuries, with numerous gurukuls (residential schools), ashrams, and herbal preparation facilities. The establishment of Patanjali Yogpeeth and Divya Pharmacy by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna near Haridwar transformed the city into India's largest Ayurvedic manufacturing and marketing complex. Patanjali's Haridwar campus covers over 100 acres and produces hundreds of Ayurvedic products from medicinal plants sourced from across India. Traditional Haridwar Ayurveda institutions like the Gurukul Kangri University (established 1902) have maintained classical Sanskrit Ayurveda education alongside modern pharmaceutical production. The Haridwar herb market in the old city still trades in raw medicinal plants, herbal preparations, and ritual herbs sourced from the Himalayan forests. NABH-accredited Panchakarma centres in Haridwar attract health tourists from across India.
