Gwalior Fort in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh, rising 100 metres above the city on a sandstone plateau, is one of the most imposing forts in India and has been described by Babur as the pearl among the fortresses of Hind. The fort contains the Man Singh Palace (1508 CE) with its stunning blue-and-yellow tiled exterior and ornate Gujarati architectural style, the Sas-Bahu twin temples (9th century), and the Teli Ka Mandir (8th century). Gwalior Fort was the site of India first political prisoner Bhimrao Ambedkar was held in 1934. The fort has served as a Mughal treasury, British political prison, and state guesthouse. Cooperative heritage tourism guides in Gwalior are certified by the IITTM and market packaged heritage tours including fort, tomb of Tansen, and Jai Vilas Palace.
