Gurdaspur Sub-Mountain Mango Orchards Dassehri
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Gurdaspur district in Punjab's northern Majha belt receives slightly higher rainfall and cooler winters from the nearby Himalayan foothills, creating a microclimate suited to mango cultivation unlike the flat Malwa plains. Farmers in Batala and Dhariwal tehsils grow Dassehri and Chausa mangoes in large orchards irrigated from the Upper Bari Doab Canal, harvesting from July to August and selling to wholesale buyers who supply Amritsar and Delhi markets. Gurdaspur mango orchards are traditional family holdings, with old trees maintained through pruning and selective replanting, preserving traditional varieties alongside newer high-density plantings.
