Gurdaspur Sub-Montane Basmati Rice Variety

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Gurdaspur's position in northern Punjab's Majha region, close to the Himalayan foothills and the Ravi river valley, creates unique paddy growing conditions where cool September nights during grain-filling develop the aromatic compounds in traditional Basmati 370 rice that flat Malwa fields cannot replicate. Gurdaspur farmers maintain traditional basmati varieties alongside new high-yielding Pusa Basmati 1121 and 1509, supplying Batala and Amritsar rice mills that export to premium Middle Eastern and European markets. The sub-montane terroir of Gurdaspur's basmati is recognised by export buyers as producing superior grain length and aroma compared to plains-grown varieties.
