Gondi Language Tribal Literature Bastar Chhattisgarh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Gondi is a Dravidian language spoken by over 3 million Gond tribal people across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, making it one of the most widely spoken tribal languages in India. Unlike many tribal languages that have been replaced by Hindi, Gondi has a script (Gunjala Gondi script, revived in the 20th century) and a growing body of literature including newspapers, folksong collections, and children textbooks. The Gond tribal identity is expressed through Gondi folk songs (Badhai), Karma and Seva dances, and oral epic traditions. Cooperative publishing houses in Jagdalpur and Raipur publish Gondi-language educational materials. Chhattisgarh government operates Gondi language radio programmes through AIR Jagdalpur.
