Giridih Tasar Sericulture Arjun Sal Forest

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Giridih district's forest landscape of arjun, sal, and terminalia supports significant tasar silkworm rearing activity by tribal and OBC cooperative members who inoculate arjun trees in designated plot areas with tasar broodlac and harvest the bronze cocoons for reeling into raw silk thread. The Central Silk Board's Giridih centre provides technical training, quality broodlac, and reeling equipment subsidy to rearers, and coordinates with Bihar's Bhagalpur weavers who use Jharkhand tasar as raw material for the famous Bhagalpuri Tussar silk fabric. Giridih's tasar silk cocoons fetch Rs 4 to 7 per piece at cooperative reeling centres, providing significant cash income to forest-dwelling tribal households over four rearing seasons per year.
