East Singhbhum Tata Steel Jamshedpur Industrial Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Jamshedpur in East Singhbhum district is India's most iconic industrial city, built from scratch by Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata who selected the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers in 1907 for India's first integrated steel plant. Tata Steel's Jamshedpur plant, now producing 10 million tonnes per year, is surrounded by a model industrial township with housing, hospitals, and schools built for workers — a planned city whose social infrastructure set standards for industrial welfare in India. East Singhbhum's Tata township model — where the company provides services from streetlights to cricket stadiums — continues to draw study from urban planners exploring public-private urban governance in Indian industrial cities.
