Deoghar Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Pilgrimage Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Deoghar's Baidyanath Dham is one of Hinduism's twelve Jyotirlingas and the most significant pilgrimage destination in Jharkhand, drawing over 3 million worshippers annually especially during Shravan month (July-August) when kanwariyas carry sacred Ganga water from Sultanganj (50 km away) on foot to offer at Shiva's shrine. The temple complex at Deoghar city contains the main Baidyanath temple surrounded by 21 smaller shrines, and the entire area operates as a living pilgrimage economy supporting priests, flower sellers, prasad makers, and thousands of seasonal vendors. Deoghar's distinctive cultural product is the baidyanath peda — sweet milk balls offered as prasad that pilgrims carry back across India.
