Bhagalpur Katia Tussar Fabric Bihar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bhagalpur in Bihar is India's premier tussar silk handloom center, known as the Silk City. Tussar silk fabric from Bhagalpur, called Bhagalpuri or Katia silk, is produced by weavers of the Tanti, Bafanda, and Ansari communities on fly-shuttle and power looms. Bhagalpur weavers blend tussar yarn with cotton or zari thread to produce sarees, dupattas, and yardage fabric in a wide variety of patterns including self-stripe, block-print ready cloth, and embroidered supplementary designs. The GI tag covers Bhagalpur Silk. The Bhagalpur Silk Weavers Cooperative provides silk yarn from Bihar sericulture and manages direct sales to national handloom stores and export buyers. Bhagalpur tussar fabric is used in kurta, saree, and furnishing fabric production and has strong demand from eco-fashion and sustainable textile buyers in Europe and Japan.
