Bhil Tribal Embroidery of Banaskantha: Vibrant Folk Art

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Bhil tribal community of Banaskantha district produces some of Gujarat's most vibrant and culturally distinctive embroidery. Bhil women's embroidery (kaachh bharat) uses vivid silk thread in chain stitch, herringbone, and satin stitch on dark cotton fabric to create densely patterned compositions featuring peacocks, elephants, horses, and geometric forms. The imagery reflects the Bhil community's forest and agricultural world. Each Bhil village has distinctive design vocabulary: neighbouring villages may use different animal motifs or colour combinations, allowing community identification through textile patterns. Embroidered shawls, skirts, blouses, and household textiles are made for personal use and increasingly for sale. The Craft Council of India and Gujarat state government programmes have helped Bhil embroiderers access national craft fairs and urban boutique markets. Documentation by the India Foundation for the Arts preserves design records and community knowledge.
