Bamboo Vinegar (Pyroligneous Acid) Production — Northeast India
Contributed by System
Bamboo vinegar — the condensate liquid collected during bamboo charcoal production — is gaining commercial value in northeast India where bamboo is abundant. During pyrolysis of bamboo in retort kilns, gas and vapour are cooled through pipes to collect crude bamboo vinegar. After 3–6 months of settling, refined bamboo vinegar contains over 200 organic compounds. Uses include: soil conditioner (improves microbial activity), plant growth promoter, natural pesticide, and animal health supplement. Assam and Meghalaya bamboo charcoal producers are increasingly capturing vinegar as additional revenue. Japan and South Korea import Indian bamboo vinegar for agriculture and cosmetics.
