Bagalkot Kalyani Chalukya Badami Pattadakal Stone Carving Karnataka
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bagalkot district in north Karnataka is the heartland of Kalyani Chalukya temple architecture, centred on the Aihole-Pattadakal-Badami heritage triangle where 7th-12th century CE temples in carved basalt and Bijapur sandstone demonstrate the evolution of Dravida, Nagara, and hybrid Vesara architectural styles that influenced temple building across peninsular India. Contemporary stone carvers in Badami and Aihole villages continue a hereditary tradition of chisel carving on local sandstone — cutting deity panels, pillar screens, lathe-turned column components, mandapa bracket reliefs, and miniature rathas — drawing on the Chalukya iconographic canon documented in ASI temple surveys. Karnataka Shilpakala Academy provides design template books and raw stone procurement grants to Bagalkot stone artisans, who supply religious boards, INTACH-sponsored temple restoration projects, and private patrons in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh for temple construction and renovation. The Pattadakal group of monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the stone carving community is recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Karnataka government under the Cultural Heritage Act.
