Anantapur Dry Thorn Forest Ecology and Wildlife Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Anantapur district's extreme aridity produces a distinctive thorn forest ecosystem dominated by Acacia, Ziziphus, and Euphorbia species adapted to the severe moisture deficit. Open scrubland and grassland patches support significant populations of Blackbuck, Indian Fox, Wolf, and Striped Hyena — species increasingly rare in developed landscapes. The Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary in the district protects critically endangered Great Indian Bustard — one of the last viable populations of this ground-dwelling bird in South India. Traditional pastoralist communities (Kuruba and Yanadi) have lived alongside these wildlife populations for generations, maintaining informal wildlife protection practices. The district's low agricultural development pressure paradoxically preserves wildlife habitats that have been lost in more fertile regions.
