Amul Dairy Cooperative Anand Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Anand Milk Union Limited (AMUL) cooperative model, pioneered in Anand district of Gujarat by Tribhuvandas Patel and Dr Verghese Kurien, is the world's largest dairy cooperative and the foundation of India's White Revolution. The AMUL model organises village-level milk producer societies (VMPS) that collect milk twice daily from smallholder farmers, test fat content, pay at the collection point, and supply to district union chilling and processing plants. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) markets AMUL products nationally and globally. The model has been replicated across India through the National Dairy Development Board's Operation Flood program. Over 3.6 million milk producer members across Gujarat benefit. The Amul model is studied globally as a benchmark cooperative poverty reduction and rural income model. Gujarat dairy cooperatives produce butter, ghee, cheese, UHT milk, and ice cream under the AMUL brand.
