Gangtok, Jul 14 (PTI) Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur on Tuesday stressed the need to expand National Cadet Corps (NCC) enrolment in schools and colleges in the Himalayan state, an official statement said. The governor said this when NCC Additional Director General, West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, Major General A P S Chahal, called on him at the Lok Bhavan here. "The governor emphasised that increasing the number of NCC cadets among the youths in schools and colleges is vital for nation-building, especially in a border and strategically significant state like Sikkim," the Lok Bhavan statement said. In the meeting, Chahal informed the governor that the process of setting up an independent NCC Group Headquarters in Sikkim is in its final stages. At present, NCC operations in the state function jointly with West Bengal. According to the statement, the new headquarters is expected to provide a dedicated administrative structure for Sikkim and further strengthen NCC programmes across the Himalayan state. The proposed independent headquarters is expected to enhance the NCC's operational reach in Sikkim and open new opportunities for young cadets in leadership, skill development and national service. The meeting also reviewed ongoing NCC initiatives, including drone training, cyber security courses, innovation programmes, adventure activities and sports, reflecting the organisation's growing focus on equipping youth with modern skills and leadership qualities, it said. Major General Chahal expressed gratitude to the governor for his continued support and encouragement towards NCC's youth-centric initiatives and outreach programmes. PTI COR RG
