Latur, Jul 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil on Saturday said the government was committed to strengthening the cooperative sector, which has played a crucial role in socio-economic development in the state.
He was speaking after performing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Sahkar Sankul (Cooperative Complex) building in Latur. Guardian minister of Latur Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale was also present.
"The cooperative movement has given a distinct identity to Maharashtra and helped build the livelihoods of millions of families. The nature of cooperation is changing with time, and the government is taking steps to make the sector stronger and more efficient," Patil said.
Cooperative institutions, particularly in rural areas, had generated large-scale employment and should not remain restricted to traditional activities, he said.
"The government has allowed primary agricultural credit societies to enter into new ventures, including grocery stores and generic medicine outlets, opening new avenues for employment. The cooperative movement will play an important role in Maharashtra's journey towards becoming a USD one trillion economy," Patil added.
The upcoming Sahkar Sankul (Cooperative Complex) in Latur would enhance the city's stature and provide better services to cooperative institutions, he added.
In his address, Bhosale said the cooperative movement had made significant contribution to the progress of Maharashtra and the proposed complex would help strengthen cooperative banks and institutions in Latur district.
"Latur has been at the forefront of the cooperative sector. The Cooperative Complex will bring various offices related to cooperation under one roof, enabling cooperative institutions to access services easily and save time," he said.
He directed officials to ensure the construction work of the complex was completed with high quality and without any compromise. PTI COR BNM
