New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) A 26-year-old man allegedly shot his girlfriend and then died by suicide in a rented house in Burari on Thursday, after she reportedly called him earlier in the day to end their six-month relationship because he was unemployed, an officer said.
Police said they received a PCR call about two people lying dead in a flat, rushed to the spot, and launched an investigation.
They said the woman's younger sister, Nishangini, a teacher at a school, discovered the bodies around 3:30 pm when she returned home from work in north Delhi. After finding the door locked from the inside, she alerted the landlord. Together, they forced the door open, police said, adding that they found both occupants lying inside with gunshot injuries and immediately informed police.
Police said they are ascertaining the exact sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the deaths.
"It has emerged that Shivangini had reportedly called Nikhil earlier in the day to end the relationship, allegedly due to his unemployment. Rest teams are verifying the details," the officer said.
Investigators said the woman, identified as Shivangini (26), originally from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh and employed with NIC in Delhi, lived in the rented accommodation with her sister. The man, Nikhil (26), originally from Pinana village in Sonipat in Haryana, was unemployed and had worked with the Delhi Development Authority on a contractual basis and used to visit her house on and off, police said.
"Preliminary investigation suggests the two had been in a relationship for the past few months. We are waiting for the crime and forensic teams for further details," a senior police officer told PTI.
"We received information on Thursday afternoon about the bodies of a man and a woman inside a rented house in Burari. A police team reached the spot and found that both had sustained gunshot injuries and were dead," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said.
The investigation indicated that the man first allegedly shot the woman and then turned the weapon on himself. The two had been in a relationship for the past six to eight months.
"Initially, we learned that the relationship was not progressing as the man expected, which appears to have caused him distress," the DCP said.
However, police said the exact motive is yet to be established and all aspects are being examined.
Police said before the incident, the man sent text messages to his family members explaining the reasons for his distress and the personal issues he had been facing.
Police have recovered the messages and are examining them as part of the investigation.
Police visited the scene, conducted a forensic examination, and initiated further legal proceedings. The DCP said family members' statements are being recorded and the investigation is underway.
Deceased Nikhil's sister informed police that he had shared a message along with his live location in the family social media messaging group shortly before the incident. Police said teams recovered one pistol and two empty cartridges from the crime scene. PTI BM SSH ASD ASD
