New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) The BJP slammed Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday over his criticism of NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar following the latter's meeting with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, claiming that the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is in complete disarray.
The ruling party's remarks came after Raut said his party is disturbed and hurt with Pawar's meeting at Shinde's office and stressed that such acts lower the credibility of a senior leader like him. He also said the meeting amounted to "glorification of traitors".
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said Raut's remarks have exposed the deep divisions within the opposition alliance, alleging that it has no mission, vision or unity.
"MVA does not stand for Maha Vikas Aghadi, it stands for Maha Vibhajan Aghadi. Sanjay Raut has now attacked Sharad Pawarji simply because he met Eknath Shinde. This shows that they have neither a mission nor a vision -- only confusion and division," Poonawalla said in a video statement.
He claimed that the Shiv Sena (UBT) is unable to keep its own party united, while it repeatedly targets its allies.
"First of all, Uddhav Sena is unable to keep itself united, yet it keeps attacking the Congress and, at times, Sharad Pawar and the NCP. Where is their unity? Are they united by any mission or vision? No, they are completely divided on issues such as Savarkar, Article 370 and Hindutva. They do not see eye to eye on anything," he said.
Poonawalla claimed that the only factor holding the opposition alliance together is its opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"The only thing that brings them together is political convenience to oppose Prime Minister Modi and the BJP. But they fail miserably every time. This is their true face," he said.
Pawar met the MLAs of his party in Shinde's office at the Vidhan Bhavan complex in Mumbai on Wednesday. The veteran leader was there to attend a meeting as a member of the high-powered committee formed by the state government on the long-pending Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute. After attending the meeting, Pawar, whose party is a constituent in the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi bloc, paid a "courtesy visit" to Shinde in his chamber.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, Raut said, "Sharad Pawar is a senior and respectable leader. The credibility of a senior leader falls when he goes and holds such meetings under the roof of a traitor who brought down our government." PTI ADI RC
