New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) A 24-year-old man died and two others were injured after a dilapidated wall of an old building collapsed, trapping four labourers under the debris during demolition work in the Jasola area, police said on Saturday.
"Information about the incident was received on Friday from Jasola at 1:27 pm. Police teams immediately rushed to the spot and found that demolition work was underway at an old and dilapidated structure when one of its side walls suddenly gave way, trapping four labourers under the debris," a senior police officer said.
The officer said the labourers were pulled from the rubble and rushed to a hospital. One of them, identified as Vijay (24), succumbed to his injuries, and two others were admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, the officer said, adding that one labourer sustained minor injuries.
Police said the Crime Team visited the scene and collected evidence.
The deceased's body has been sent for a post-mortem. According to police, they apprehended the demolition contractor, Shamshudin, a resident of southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar, and are working to arrest the building owner, Khurshid.
Police said the Badarpur SDM sealed the premises.
Police said an FIR has been registered at Sarita Vihar police station and further investigation is underway.
"Investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the collapse, including whether prescribed safety measures and statutory requirements were complied with during the demolition work," police said.
Suraj Narayan Yadav, a security guard posted near the site, said four labourers were demolishing a wall when the accident occurred. "Four labourers were demolishing the wall. Suddenly, the wall collapsed on them. One labourer died on the spot, while the remaining three were injured. They were pulled out from the debris and shifted to a nearby hospital," Yadav said.
Officials are also verifying permissions related to the demolition and the responsibilities of those supervising the work.
The latest accident comes just days after a building collapse in Rohini's Sector 16 claimed three lives and left another person injured. Then the four-storey under-construction structure collapsed following heavy rainfall, trapping workers under the debris. Rescue teams from multiple agencies carried out hours long operation to extricate those trapped. The incident prompted authorities to order an enquiry into the structural stability of vulnerable buildings. PTI BM ASD ASD
