Chennai, Jul 9 (PTI) Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran on Thursday responded positively to Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's decision to hand over appointment orders to families of Karur stampede victims, but said he should have consoled the affected families earlier.
While providing them humanitarian relief was a welcome move, the CM should have visited the affected families and comforted them immediately after the tragic incident occurred, he said.
"The timing of the announcement on the chief minister's visit tomorrow, and the resignation of Karur MLA, suggests that the government is using the relief measures to influence people ahead of the upcoming bypolls," Nagenthran told reporters here, referring to M R Vijayabaskar, who had won on an AIADMK ticket and recently joined the TVK.
Nagenthran termed the resignation of former AIADMK legislators from Karur, Ambasamudram and Viralimalai, and their shift of loyalty to the ruling TVK, as "politically motivated".
Vijay will distribute appointment letters to members of the 32 families affected by the stampede in Karur on September 27, 2025, which occurred when he was addressing a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally.
The incident left 41 dead and many injured. PTI JSP SSK
