Indore/Bhopal, Jul 9 (PTI) Two men held allegedly with 11 grams of brown sugar on Thursday have told Indore police that they were going to hand over the contraband to Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari's younger brother Nana Patwari and another person, an official claimed.
"Rajendra Nagar police arrested Irfan Khan alias Golu Chanderi and Rani Bhai and 10.8 grams of brown sugar was recovered from their possession. The process of registering a case against both accused is underway," Deputy Commissioner of Police Narendra Rawat told reporters.
The DCP said preliminary interrogation of the two accused revealed they were going to deliver this consignment of brown sugar to two individuals named Nana Patwari and Manav Gangwani.
Rawat said Nana Patwari has nine criminal cases registered against his name, and information about the criminal history of the others is being gathered, adding that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the probe.
While Jai Hardia, the lawyer representing Patwari's family, claimed police had detained Nana Patwari, DCP Rawat did not clarify whether Nana Patwari and Gangwani had been arrested in connection with the brown sugar seizure.
"Police have detained Nana Patwari, the younger brother of the state Congress president, and he has also been taken to the scene of the incident," Hardia said.
When asked whether Nana Patwari was being detained in connection with a drug case, Hardia claimed he was not aware of this at the moment.
Hitting out on the development, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari, in an X post, said, "Chief Minister Ji, #IndorePolice has taken my brother into custody without any notice, sending this political message that @BJP4MP is now taking "revenge"! Anyone who raises raises their voice against those in power/the Chief Minister will be suppressed, even with the support of "law", he alleged.
In the post, Patwari said he "knew" that "false legal actions" would be taken against him and and his family "due to the government's personal malice".
"Let me reiterate! We will neither fear nor bow to this politics filled with legal pressure/influence! Instead, we will fight the ground battle with even greater strength!" the Congress leader asserted.
Congress Rajya Sabha member and senior lawyer Vivek Tankha, in a post on 'X' said, "Learned from @jitupatwari ji that suddenly the Indore police, without giving any information about the offence, arrested and took away his younger brother, and this information was not given to the Patwari family." "Request to @DGP MP and @CP_INDORE @comindore that do not create such a practice that becomes troublesome in the future," Tankha further said. PTI HWP MAS BNM
