Faridabad, Jul 6 (PTI) Faridabad police arrested a lifer who was convicted for killing his girlfriend and had been absconding for nearly two decades, after being released on bail in 2006, police said on Monday.
The police arrested Vikash alias Vicky, a resident of Delhi's Pandav Nagar, on Saturday at his current residence in Mandawali's Chandra Vihar. He was produced in a city court and sent into judicial custody.
A case regarding the shooting death of a woman was registered at the Surajkund Police Station on April 19, 2001, the police said, adding that the investigation revealed that Vikash had shot dead his girlfriend.
Acting swiftly, the police arrested Vikash on April 29, 2001, gathered concrete evidence against and submitted the charge sheet to the court. Following the trial, the court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 20,000 in July 2002, they added.
Vikash had filed an appeal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the sentencing order and was granted bail in May 2006, a Faridabad police spokesperson said.
However, he subsequently failed to appear before the court and absconded, he said, adding that he kept changing his location and lived under a concealed identity to evade arrest. The court had issued a re-arrest warrant against him for failing to appear.
"The Crime Branch Sector-65 team conducted continuous raids at various locations, including parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh's Hapur. Finally, on July 4, the team succeeded in arresting him from Delhi and produced him before the court and sent him to jail," the spokesperson. PTI COR SHS
