Central team visits Arunachal's flood-hit Keyi Panyor to assess damage

Itanagar, Jul 8 (PTI) An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on Wednesday visited Arunachal Pradesh's flood-hit Keyi Panyor district to assess the damage caused and evaluate the need for additional central assistance, officials said. The team, led by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary Nishtha Tiwari, was accompanied by state Disaster Management Secretary Dani Salu during the visit, they said. The delegation travelled from state capital Itanagar to the district by road, inspecting landslide-hit stretches and road breaches along the way that have disrupted connectivity in the region, they added. The team later visited the worst-affected areas, including the Posa NEEPCO Colony and Possa village, to take stock of the destruction caused by the floods. On June 24, a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides in the district, killing three people while two others remain missing. The disaster also damaged the NEEPCO colony, houses, government buildings and other infrastructure. Following the field visit, the IMCT held a review meeting with Keyi Panyor Deputy Commissioner Shweta Nagarkoti, SP Angad Mehta, and public representatives. During the meeting, Nagarkoti briefed the team on the extensive damage to public infrastructure, losses in the agriculture sector and the district's immediate relief and rehabilitation requirements, officials said. The team's ground assessment will form the basis of its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, which will determine the quantum of additional central financial assistance to be provided to Arunachal Pradesh for reconstruction efforts, they said.
