Kolkata, Jul 13 (PTI) The Calcutta High Court on Monday refused an urgent hearing to former Trinamool Congress chief whip Nirmal Ghosh, who is seeking protection from any coercive action by the police on the claim that an FIR has been lodged against him on fictitious grounds.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya asked Ghosh's lawyer to file the petition and said the matter will be heard as per the serial of listing.
The former TMC MLA's son Tirthankar Ghosh was arrested on Monday morning for alleged involvement in cheating and extortion activities.
Nirmal Ghosh, a three-time former MLA of Panihati, is also an accused in the alleged extortion case.
Ghosh's lawyer claimed before the court that after he lost the 2026 assembly election, the FIR was lodged against him on frivolous and fictitious grounds.
He lost to BJP's Ratna Debnath, the mother of the rape and murder victim doctor of R G Medical College and Hospital.
The on-duty post-graduate trainee doctor's body was found on August 9, 2024 in the seminar room of the medical college hospital, leading to a nationwide furore over the gruesome incident. PTI AMR RG
