Lucknow, Jul 13 (PTI) Former Union minister Anurag Thakur on Monday advocated for ‘One Nation, One Election’, saying that it can result in substantial savings of resources, reduce policy paralysis caused by frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, and ensure continuity in governance.
The Hamirpur MP was in Lucknow to attend the Joint Committee of Parliament’s nationwide study tour on building consensus on simultaneous elections.
"A productive and insightful day in Lucknow during the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) study tour. Held in-depth discussions with senior officers of the Uttar Pradesh Government, including @ChiefSecyUP Shri S.P. Goyal Ji, @dgpup Shri Rajeev Krishna Ji, @ceoup, and other key officers from Finance, Home, Education, Tourism, and Agriculture departments on the ground realities and implementation of #OneNationOneElection," Thakur said on X.
“Also engaged with representatives from PSUs and stakeholders including @NFL_Kisan, @centralbank_in, @FCI_India, @nafedindia, @RailwayNorthern, @RailVikas, @CoalIndiaHQ, and @pgcilindia, followed by enriching legal inputs from Senior Advocates and members of the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh, @AwadhBar at the Lucknow Bench, he added.
The 41-member committee is examining the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 to implement the 'One Nation, One Election' framework.
The committee, chaired by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, has been conducting nationwide consultations to roll out simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies by 2029.
"Emphasised that simultaneous elections will result in huge savings of resources, minimise policy paralysis caused by frequent Model Code of Conduct periods, and ensure greater governance continuity.
