Guwahati, Jul 6 (PTI) Police have filed chargesheets in only 54 per cent of nearly 10 lakh registered cases in Assam since 2016, when the BJP government came to power for the first time in the state, the Assembly was informed on Monday.
In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a total of 9,68,938 different types of cases were registered across police stations since 2016.
"Out of that, chargesheets have been filed in 5,20,782 cases," he added.
In the 10-year period, 2,04,134 cases related to crime against women were registered in Assam, Sarma said in a written response to Congress MLA Baby Begum.
Out of these, 2,961 are related to murder, while 15,397 women were raped, he added.
"A total of 1,33,675 chargesheets have been filed in these cases of crime against women," said the CM, who also holds the Home portfolio.
From 2021, when Sarma took charge as chief minister, 3,78,483 FIRs have been registered, while chargesheets have been filed in 2,54,538 cases, according to a reply to a separate query by Congress MLA Nurul Islam.
"In the last five years, 4,26,502 accused have been arrested in connection with these cases. Out of them, 29,164 have been punished as per the law," he added. PTI TR TR RG
