Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Jul 17 (PTI) Five Congress councillors were on Friday suspended for two months from the Coimbatore Corporation Council following a clash with DMK councillors during the council meeting.
Mayor Ranganayaki announced the suspension after heated exchanges erupted over allegations of Rs 40 crore corruption scandal in the civic body's 'Semmozhi poonga' project.
The confrontation began when Congress Councillor and All India Congress Committee member, R Gayathri, raised questions regarding a newspaper report alleging a Rs 40-crore scam in the project.
Gayathri demanded that the Corporation Commissioner issue a white paper detailing the expenditure, contractor selection, and tender transparency.
However, the query sparked an aggressive response, Gayathri told PTI Videos.
She alleged that she was physically obstructed, intimidated, and that opposition members even pulled her sari inside the council hall.
"I asked a simple question regarding public money, but instead of answers, I faced violence," Gayathri added. PTI JR JR ROH
