Wancho Tribal Weaving Longding Arunachal Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Wancho tribal weaving is practiced by the Wancho Naga community of Longding district in Arunachal Pradesh, producing ceremonial and everyday textiles on the backstrap loom (kang). Wancho textiles feature bold black, red, white, and yellow geometric pattern bands including warrior motifs, hornbill bird designs, and human figure symbols on cotton base. The cloth types include the Tokhung (shawl) worn by warriors and the Longkhau (loincloth) for men. Ceremonial weaving for community festivals and warrior society graduation rites is central to Wancho social life. The Arunachal Pradesh government handloom department provides backstrap loom and cotton yarn support to Wancho women weavers. Contemporary Wancho textiles are sold through the state government emporium and exhibited at northeastern craft fairs. The craft is being documented by the North East Zone Cultural Centre.
