Koilsagar and Narayanpur Reservoir Water Heritage of Vikarabad

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Vikarabad district's water security depends on the Koilsagar Reservoir on the Dindi river and several other smaller reservoirs that capture the district's moderate monsoon rainfall. Traditional check dam chains across the Dindi and its tributaries created groundwater recharge zones that maintained well water levels through the dry season. The Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme brings Krishna river water to the district's semi-arid uplands. Community water management traditions in Vikarabad include the Koilkunta system — communal ponds maintained near each hamlet for cattle watering and domestic use — an institution that predates modern water supply infrastructure.
