Kedarnath Temple Ancient Stone Architecture
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Kedarnath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands at 3583 metres in Rudraprayag district and is believed to be over a thousand years old, attributed to construction by the Pandavas and later renovation by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The temple is built from large interlocking grey stone blocks without mortar, fitted with extraordinary precision to withstand heavy snowfall and occasional earthquakes. The structure survived the catastrophic 2013 floods that devastated the surrounding area, partly attributed to a massive boulder that deflected the debris flow. The rectangular sanctum with a conical shikhara and wooden mandapa represents early medieval north Indian temple architecture adapted for extreme Himalayan conditions. The priest community (Jangamas) maintains ancient ritual traditions.
