Garhwali Gharats: Traditional Water Mills of Pauri
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Gharats (traditional water mills) powered by fast-flowing Himalayan streams were the primary grain grinding technology across Garhwal for centuries before electric mills arrived. The Gharats use a horizontal turbine wheel rather than a vertical wheel, a technology distinct from European water mills. Mill operators (Gharanis) maintained hereditary rights to operate specific millstreams under village resource allocation systems. The rhythmic grinding sound, the wooden gearing, and the stone millstones ground grain to the preferred coarse texture for hill flatbreads. Gharats also served as social gathering spaces where villagers waited for their grain to be ground and exchanged news. A revival movement in Pauri and other Garhwal districts promotes Gharat operation for eco-tourism, traditional grain grinding, and cultural heritage preservation.
