Malthi Fair: Traditional Annual Gathering and Market Champawat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Malthi fair held in Champawat district is one of Kumaon's traditional annual fairs combining religious observance, trade, and cultural celebration. Such fairs (melas) historically served as the primary commercial events where hill communities exchanged agricultural products, livestock, tools, and textiles over several days. Folk performers including dancers, musicians, and acrobats traveled between fairs creating a circuit of cultural exchange. Traditional games and wrestling competitions (dangal) attracted young men from surrounding villages building inter-community bonds. The fair format preserved oral traditions, folk knowledge, and cultural practices through performance and social gathering. Contemporary fairs maintain the cultural character while incorporating modern commercial elements.
