Ringal Bamboo Basketry and Craft Almora Hills
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ringal (Himalayan bamboo, Thamnocalamus species) growing in forests above 2000 metres in Almora district is the primary material for a sophisticated basketry tradition. Artisans split ringal culms into thin flexible strips and weave them into baskets, mats, winnowing fans, storage containers, and decorative items using traditional twill and hexagonal weave patterns. The thin-walled ringal produces lighter and more flexible items than lowland bamboo. Traditional designs include the Kilta (conical basket carried on the back) used for agricultural and forest work. Forest rights legislation affects access to ringal stands traditionally harvested by specific communities. Women artisans in village cooperatives have expanded production to supply craft markets in hill towns and urban centres.
