Thanjavur Thalayaatti Bommai Doll Craft Tamil Nadu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Thanjavur Thalayaatti Bommai (bobblehead doll), the distinctive round-bottomed weighted papier-mache and gesso figurine with a spring-mounted head that nods when touched, is one of Tamil Nadu most recognisable craft forms, produced by specialist artisan families in Thanjavur town and the surrounding villages using a technique that combines a solid clay or papier-mache body, a gesso and chalk surface coat, natural mineral pigment painting, and a spring mechanism at the neck joint that allows the head to bob continuously. The typical Thalayaatti Bommai depicts the dancing Bharatanatyam dancer, the king and queen, or the divine couple Radha-Krishna, seated in a wide-based posture that provides stability and emphasises the nodding head as the animated feature. The round body is slip-cast or hand-formed in two halves over a mold, assembled with gum, and then whitened with chalk slurry before painting in the traditional bright Thanjavur colour palette of red, gold, and green with fine black ink detail lines. Thanjavur dolls hold GI status, and the government Poompuhar craft emporium network in Tamil Nadu maintains the primary retail channel alongside handicraft exports to the Tamil diaspora.
