Teak Forests and Forest Ecology of Tapi District
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Tapi district's high-rainfall zone supports some of Gujarat's finest teak (Tectona grandis) forests in the Sahyadri-linked hills along the Maharashtra border. These teak forests, managed by the Gujarat Forest Department as reserved forests, produce high-quality timber and non-timber forest produce. Teak is harvested on 60-year rotations under selective felling systems. The understorey of teak forests supports a rich biodiversity: leopards, sloth bears, porcupines, and hundreds of bird species. Tribal communities (Dhodiya, Gamit, Vasava) have traditional rights to collect mahua flowers, kendu leaves, and bamboo from teak forest areas under Joint Forest Management (JFM) arrangements. The Tapi river's headwaters in Tapi district are replenished by forested catchments, making teak forest conservation critical for downstream water security in Surat and south Gujarat. Traditional community-protected forest patches (rakhdi) preserve old-growth forest biodiversity within the broader managed forest landscape.
