Tangkhul Naga Shawl Weaving Cooperative Ukhrul Manipur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Tangkhul Naga weavers from the Ukhrul district of Manipur produce one of northeast India most distinctive textile traditions — intricate handwoven cotton and wool shawls with geometric supplementary weft patterns specific to village, clan, and ceremonial occasion. Tangkhul shawl patterns are codified by tradition: the Rui shawl with its bold chevron borders signals warrior status, and ceremonial Tangkhul shawls are essential gifts in marriage, funeral, and clan recognition ceremonies. Women of Ukhrul district use traditional back-strap looms and floor looms, passing design knowledge from mother to daughter. The Tangkhul Naga weaving cooperative society in Ukhrul town supports registered weavers with yarn procurement and market access through craft fairs and government emporiums. Tangkhul woven cloth has gained urban fashion interest for its striking geometric aesthetics. Nagaland and Manipur border weaving traditions share motif vocabulary while maintaining distinct village-specific pattern ownership.
