Sitamarhi Sugarcane Jaggery North Bihar

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Sitamarhi district grows sugarcane in the fertile alluvial belt along the Bagmati and its tributaries, with autumn-planted cane processed at village kolhu presses into gur jaggery and at the Sitamarhi cooperative sugar mill into white sugar during the November-March crushing season. The district's jaggery is marketed at local mandis and through Bihar's cooperative network, and artisanal gur produced from the first pressing of the season is consumed as prasad at temples and shared with neighbours in an act of agricultural thanksgiving. Sitamarhi's sugarcane farming supports a dense rural processing economy with pressing workers, drivers, and traders participating in the three-month crushing season.
