Satara district's Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani hill station at 1,300 metres is India's premier strawberry growing area, where cool misty conditions on the Western Ghats plateau support summer-fruiting strawberries whose season (November-March) draws thousands of tourists to pick-your-own strawberry farms along the Mahabaleshwar road. Mahabaleshwar also grows mulberry for sericulture, raspberries, and the celebrated Mahabaleshwar honey from the ghats' wildflower meadows. Satara city produces the Satara's Petha (a sweet gourd preserve) and the district's Kshatriya Kolegaon cooperative grows table grapes for the Pune market.
